To Sketch a Memory:
“A Sweet Encounter in Jiyugaoka”
Lately, while memorizing French cuisine vocabulary, I found myself reminiscing about the colorful and fragrant desserts of Jiyugaoka—just from the French pastry vocabulary alone!
Right across from Jiyugaoka Department Store lies MONT-BLANC, a patisserie whose Mont Blanc chestnut cake is simply unforgettable.
Made from high-grade Japanese Rihei chestnuts with an intensely rich aroma, this French-inspired dessert combines silky chestnut purée with fresh cream. Its shape, reminiscent of a snow-covered mountain peak, gave it its name—Mont Blanc. Over time, flavors like chocolate and vanilla have been added, but the original chestnut version remains my absolute favorite.
The sweetness is gentle, with a fragrant, smooth texture that never feels heavy. As it melts in your mouth, the deep chestnut aroma gradually unfolds. Pair it with a cup of authentic Darjeeling loose-leaf tea, brewed in a vintage-style teapot, and a slice of Japanese mandarin—sipping it warm creates such a uniquely delightful experience. The thoughtful addition of a tiny strainer on the cup’s edge truly captures the essence of a European afternoon tea—a moment of self-indulgence.
Right now, I really wish I could take just one more bite!
